Today, I wanted to share one of my most popular and one of the prettiest joining methods I know, the Zigzag Slip Stitch Join. This is one of those techniques that looks far more complicated than it is! So whether you’re a beginner or seasoned hooker this fast and free joining tutorial will add a fun twist to your blanket.

Zigzag Slip Stitch Join
Join with a ss from right side to wrong side into the last chain of the working edge of your Square A as indicated on diagram below.
Slip stitch into the corresponding square from right side to wrong side.
Continue to slip stitch from in each corresponding stitch along
This will continue until you reach the first chain of the opposite corner. You will then continue this across another square to connect. This will continue until you have joined all of the squares in that column.
You will join all of the squares in the columns first and then join the rows. The photos below will show you how to work over the existing corners.
- Work the stitch as normal
- Pull the yarn through under the join
- Work the stitch over the join
- Worth the stitch as normal

I have completed joining the rows and columns using the zigzag stitch. I am now adding that first border (DC in UK terms, SC in US terms). When I come to the row or column across the blanket where the squares are joined, do I add a chain to skip over the point at which the two rows or columns are joined? If I don’t, I noticed that the stitch will pull across that space. This is the first blanket I’ve ever done so I’m now sure what to do at that point.

Hi Terrie you’re very welcome, I’m happy to hear you’ve found my tutorial helpful When you’re working across the join, I would do things a little differently by working two stitches together either side. To do this, start your first DC on the right side of the join by inserting your hook, yarning over and pulling through, but then before completing the stitch you should insert your hook into the left side of the join, yarn over and pull through, and then yarn over and pull through all loops. You should find that working the stitch this way makes it pull less. Hope this helps

this is my first time to watch. I love how you taught the zigzag slip stitch join on your circle of hope blanket. I do not see how to finish the border. I saw a small picture and it looked great. can you share what you did please?

Thank you, the squares are knitted in acrylic yarn using size US 8 needles. I assume I should use. US I-9 crochet hook to join. Does that sound right?

Hi Sara Yes, you can leave the middle chain unworked and once all the squares are joined you won’t notice
