How to Crochet a Super Solid Granny Square

Learn how to crochet a super solid granny square with my free step-by-step pattern and video tutorial. This square was inspired by someone asking me if there was a way of crocheting a solid granny square with absolutely no holes! So I sat down and created one for you all.

In this post you will find the written pattern and video tutorials available in both right and left-handed versions.

    Pattern Notes

    • Written in UK terms but switchable to US terms below.
    • Video tutorial can be found at the base of the post for both right and left-handed crochet.

    Convert Pattern Terms

    Here you can quickly switch between UK and US crochet terms. This will make following the pattern easier as all terms will be converted to your preferred version.

    Terms & Abbreviations

    • Chain: ch(s): Yarn over, pull through.
    • Double Crochet: dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook.  Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
    • Double Treble Crochet: dtr(s): Yarn over hook twice, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have four loops on the hook.  Yarn over, pull through two loops, you will have three loops on the hook.  Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
    • Triple Treble Crochet: ttr(s): Yarn over hook three times, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop, you will have five loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, you will have four loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through the remaining two loops.
    • st: Stitch.
    • sk next st/sk next ch sp: skip the next stitch / skip next chain space.

    Patchwork Blanket

    Super Solid Granny Square: FREE Pattern

    You are viewing this pattern in UK terms.

    Foundation Chain: Chain 4 and join with ss in 4th ch from hook.

    Round 1: ch3, (2 tr, dtr, ttr, dtr) all in centre circle. *3tr, dtr, ttr, dtr into centre circle. Rep from * 2 more times. Join with ss in top of ch-3 from beginning of round.

    Round 2: ch3, tr in next 2 sts (3dtr into ttr from previous row), *tr in next 5 sts, (3dtr in corner st) 2 more times. tr in next st. Join.

    Round 3: ch3, tr in next 4 sts (3dtr into ttr from previous row), *tr in next 7 sts, (3dtr in corner st) 2 more times. tr in next st. Join.

    For continuous rows: ch3, tr to corner st (3dtr into ttr from previous row), *tr to corner st, (3dtr in corner st) 2 more times. tr in remaining sts st. Join.

    Tie off and sew in ends.

      Thank you so much. This is fabulous. In fact, I wanted to make a huge afghan in stripes but I find it much easier to work w/granny squares than huge piece. But I hate the holes! Now I can put them together one by one & row by row.. So I am placing your granny squares side by side to create stripes. So thank you for creating a way for me to make a striped afghan.
