Materials & tools
- Yarn:ย Sirdar Alpine Luxe fur effect yarn (100% Polyester) 33m (36yds), 50g (1.8oz) in Polar. Small (8 balls approx), Medium (12 balls approx), Large (17 balls approx)
- Hook:ย 10mm
- Scissors
- Darning Needle
The Yarn
Alpine is the most realistic fur effect yarn weโve ever developed and we think youโll want to wear this cosy luxurious yarn all winter. Luxurious and warm, it is great to knit with on a cold evening. Like a super chunky yarn, you will be able to create a cosy accessory in one night. Machine wash on a cool wool cycle and cool tumble dry.
I hadn’t worked with yarn like this before and it did have it’s challenges at first. I tried out a few different stitches to see what would work best for this project and I and very happy with the result. You will see that in the assisting video tutorial that accompanies this project, I have chosen NOT to use this yarn to demonstrate with, simply because you wouldn’t be able to see what I was doing. This yarn will require you to hone in on your fingertips to feel your way through the project….but don’t worry, it’s not as difficult as it sounds and I’ll talk you through what you are feeling for in the video tutorial as the base of this post.

Colours
This yarn comes in the most beautoful shades! These are some of my favourites!

Hello, I would love to make the medium pattern but I can’t seem to open the PDF version, is there anyway you could e-mail it to me?
Hi Chelsea, only the small one is free if you wish to make the medium or large one you can purchase a low cost PDF pattern here:- http://bit.ly/AlpineTreeSkirt Thanks Sarah-Jayne ๐
Thank you! The link is now working and I have bought the pattern! So excited to try it out!
I’ve just finished my medium. Love this yarn – never used it before and feeling for the stitches took a bit of practice. I want to make a snuggly jumper out of it now!
I ended up staggering the increases on the odd-numbered rows from about row 7 onwards (by splitting the first repeat, if that makes sense!) otherwise the increases were sitting on top of each other too often and I was ending up with slightly noticeable corners and I wanted more of a perfect circle.
Lovely design Sarah-Jayne, thank you
You’re very welcome ๐
Hello Philippa,
Help!!!
I like your idea of staggering the increases from about row 7 onwards in order to achieve a more perfect circle as you say, “by splitting the first repeat, if that makes sense!”
Well, try as I might I cannot figure out what that means…please explain how to stagger the increases.
I am currently at row/round 7 and am loving the look of this easy to make “Christmas Tree Skirt”, and have purchased the PDF pattern to make it bigger ๐
*To Sarah-Jayne,
Thank you for making this quick and easy pattern available…it is exactly what I was looking for, and written to be easily understood.
Also, I appreciate that the post includes a tutorial (AND a tutorial for left handed crocheters, how thoughtful)…and that the post has a “button” to “click on” to change the pattern from British to USA crochet terminology!!!
Happy crocheting,
Donna (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada)
Thank you Donna, Iโm so glad youโre happy with the pattern! By splitting the increase, you will only work part of the first set of stitches before proceeding with the pattern repeat, and ending with the skipped stitches at the end of the row. This means the increases are spread throughout the row instead of being stacked on top of each other. I hope that makes sense
Thank you! The link is now working and I have bought the pattern! So excited to try it out!
Hello,
Wondering what I would do if I wanted an even larger shirt. I have a very large tree.
Hi Allison A simple way to make a larger skirt would be to use a larger hook – you could even try using two strands of the yarn held together. The low cost pattern which includes instructions to make the medium and large size skirt can also be found on my blog here: https://blog.tcctest.co.uk/crochet-tree-skirt-free-pattern/
I found the video to be wanting in clear and complete instructions. Since this was ny first time using a video to learn a new pattern or stitch, I feel you should have made it a little more clearer about going onto this website. I also followed the instructions as clearly as they were presented and was surprised that you did not use the same stitch throughout. You also went so fast that I had to constantly pause the video
Hi Barbara I’m sorry you found the tutorial to be not clear enough and too fast to follow easily; if it helps, you can adjust the playback speed in the settings under the video to make it slower. The pattern does in fact use the same stitch throughout (UK treble) but at some points in the video I do say to make a double crochet stitch – this is an error on my behalf, as noted in the written pattern, and you should in fact be making treble crochet stitches. I hope this helps
Can I get a PDF for the large alpine tree skirt?
Hi Denise you can purchase the low cost PDF pattern for the large tree skirt which can be found on my blog at blog.bellacococrochet.com ๐
Hi,
I’m pretty sure the total stitch count at the end of row 2 is off. I believe it should be 50 instead of 48. I’ve been scratching my head and trying to figure it out for some time now, and that’s all I can conclude because it doesn’t make sense any other way. If this was a typo, could you please fix it for the other poor crocheters in the future? Thanks.
Hi Genevieve, thank you for picking this up: it is indeed a typo in the pattern and Iโm really sorry for any confusion itโs caused! The correct stitch count for round 2 is 50 and I will have the pattern amended asap
