In this post I’ll be sharing my Bobble Stripe Baby Blanket Pattern. The Bobble Stripe Crochet Blanket is a pattern that’s incredibly close to my heart. I started crocheting this baby blanket and then put it down for roughly a year before picking it back up again when I was pregnant. This crochet blanket was the first thing I made for my little girl, so you can see why it’s such a personal pattern.
Designing the Blanket
This crochet baby blanket design started with the colours. At this point, I didn’t even know that I was going to create a baby blanket let alone crocheting something that would turn into something so sentimental.
I was drawn to five dreamy pastel shades by Stylecraft Yarns. I started experimenting with different textures, playing around with a variety of different stitches to see how they would sit alongside each other and decided these stitches would make a lovely blanket.
However, I put this project to one side unfinished. Fast forward a year I found out I was pregnant with my first child. As nesting began I picked up this project and felt inspired to create a baby blanket. It’s definitely one of my favourite crochet patterns. I find the act of getting the stripes, bobbles and colours in the right place takes just the right amount of focus to make this a mindful make.
Colour Palette: Stylecraft Special DK
Materials & tools
- Yarn: DK (Light worsted weight) yarn in 5 colours.
- I have used Style Craft Special DK in colours; Cream, Duck Egg, Clematis, Parma Violet and Wisteria.
- If you’re choosing your own colour scheme, Colour A should be the colour you would like your bobbles to be. I suggest that you choose a neutral or lighter colour for this.
- Hook:Â 4.5 mm (US 7)
- Scissors
- Darning Needle

- If you are watching the video tutorial and altering your sizing: If you are doing any other multiple of 24 (not including 96+1 like I have done in the sample) The bobble row must do 4 half treble crochets, change colour on the 5th half treble crochet and then bobble on the 6th. This 6 stitch pattern will repeat all the way along. Do not bobble in the last stitch of that row.

- Turning chains DO NOT class as a stitch. You will find instruction of how may chains to work for each row in the pattern below.
- The bobble stitch is worked slightly differently in this pattern. Please ensure that you are pushing the bobble stitch to the RS (right side) of your work.
Gauge & size
- 14 dc over 4 inches. 9 row repeat measures 3 inches
- Completed size: 24 inches X 29 inches

- Slip Stitch(s): ss(s): Insert hook, yarn over, pull through stitch and loop on hook.
- Double Crochet(s): dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
- Half Treble Crochet(s): htr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through all three loops.
- Treble Crochet(s): tr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
- Crab Stitch (cs): reverse dc. Working in the opposite direction. Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

Half Treble Crochet with Bobble Row
- With selected contrasting colour (this will be the same colour as you have used in the previous row) Ch2 (does not class as a st) and ** work 4 htr.
- Change to Colour A with your next htr, to do this you should: Yarn over, insert hook into next st, yarn over and pull up a loop, drop the contrasting colour (you will be carrying this through the work) and pull Colour A through all three loops on the hook.
- With Colour A, work your bobble stitch. *Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over and pull up loop on the hook; repeat from * 3 more times. You will have 9 loops on your hook. Drop colour A (you will be carrying this through the work) and with contrasting colour, yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook.
- Push your bobble to the right side of the work. Repeat from ** to the end of the row replacing the last bobble stitch with a half treble crochet
Granny Row 1 & 2
You are viewing this pattern in UK terms.
- You will be working into the spaces BETWEEN the stitches here rather than into the top of the stitch.
- Ch3 (does NOT class as a stitch). Tr into first sp, *Skip 1 sp and work 2 tr into the next sp) Repeat from * to second to last stitch. Tr into remaining stitch. Turn.
- Ch3, tr in first sp. *2 tr into next space; repeat from * to the second to last sp. Tr in top of ch-3 from previous row. Tie off.

Hi!
I made a sneaky start on the bobble stitch pattern last week and am loving it. Just a question: on the HTr row after the Granny rows, the pdf pattern says to skip the first Tr but the free pattern on line does not mention this and the videos don’t show you doing it. I am now following the pdf and that works fine, but realise that not everyone will have the pdf Does that make sense?
Hi Anna the pattern has been updated with a few changes made to improve it. So there will be slight differenced between the PDF and video 🙂

I’ve just got to row 35 and I feel that it should be colour E not D. I might be wrong
The colour layout in the pattern can be used just as a guide, so if you feel you would rather use colour E in this row there is not reason why you shouldn’t
I have reached this point as well, I was thinking E as you have already done a granny row in d,c and b, but no E

Hi. In the pattern row 1 says “chain 2, start in the 3rd chain from the hook”. But in the video tutorial it’s chain 1 and work into the 2nd stitch from hook?
There are some discrepancies between the video tutorial and the pattern, as the pattern was updated ready for the new crochet along
I want to use the same colours as you, can you tell me which letter relates to which colour please
I have used Cream is colour 1 (A), Duck Egg is colour 2 (B), Clematis is colour 3 (C), Parma Violet is colour 4 (D) and Wisteria is colour 5 (E) hope this helps and good luck 🙂

I have just started the my 2nd row of bobble stitches & it is on the back of my work & not on the front?
Am following the pattern above but after row 9 should there be another row in between (which would of been the foundation chain)

Hi Samantha, we have checked the video and the PDF and it’s definitely right. It does mention that the bobbles need pushing through on both the pattern and the blog post so that they are on the correct side. I hope this helps 🙂

What I would like to crochet a toddler blanket. How many chains should I start with? How much yarn do I need?
This is a really difficult question to answer, it would depend on the size you want, the yarn you are using, your hook size and your tension. If you start your chains and keep going until you get to the width you want and then carry on from their. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help but wish you luck with your blanket 🙂
Are there US instructions available for the bobble stripe blanket?

This is a beautiful blanket, thanks for the pattern. I just have two questions: approximately how much yarn did you use? and I noticed some differences between the video tutorial and pattern. Which one should I follow?
Hi Heidi You’re very welcome, I’m glad you like it You will need 5 100g balls of DK weight for this pattern; if you’re choosing your own colours I’d recommend one of them to be a light colour such as white or cream. You should be able to make the blanket using either tutorial as long as you don’t mix and match.
Hello I am working on the bobble stripe blanket On row 4, I am on the wrong side and pushing the bobbes through to the right side as instructed, however on the repeat, bobble row 13, I am actually starting that on the right side. Is that correct? Someone above has asked the same question. So should there be 2 rows of hdc at row 10. So like a sneaky row 10.1 and then carry on as usual for row 11 as a sc? thanks so much
Hi Tracey I work the bobble stitch a little differently in this pattern; normally you would work it with the wrong side of the blanket facing you, as the bobble naturally wants to pop out away from us, to the right side. As we are working row four with the right side of the blanket facing us, you will just need to use your finger to pop the bobble so it’s facing towards us instead. On row thirteen, you will have the wrong side of the blanket facing, so you can just leave the bobble as it is. There’s no need to insert any extra rows this way
