Materials & Tools

Pattern Notes
- Written in UK terms but switchable to US crochet terms below.
- Video tutorials available in right and left-handed versions
The Yarn
When it comes to washcloths, cotton yarn is the best yarn to use. Cotton yarn absorbs water, washes well and also holds its shape. If you wish to use a different weight yarn such as a DK, I would suggest adding additional chains in multiples of two to get up to 7.5 inches. I have used Paintbox Cotton Aran for this project.

Convert Pattern Terms
Here you can quickly switch between UK and US crochet terms. This will make following the pattern easier as all terms will be converted to your preferred version.
Terms & Abbreviations
- Chain: ch(s): Yarn over, pull through.
- Double crochet: dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
- Dc3tog (double crochet three together) insert hook into first chain, yarn over, pull through, insert hook into next chain, yarn over pull through, insert hook into next chain, yarn over, pull through. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on the hook.

Unsure of the differences between UK and US terms? Need a refresher on how to do your crochet stitches? In my ‘How to crochet: A handy reference guide’ EBook I help you with all of these terms and you can always have them to hand! You will also get exclusive access to free video instructions. You can find my EBook HERE.

Have made lots of wash cloths but I absoluteky love your pattern. My next ones will be yours. Thank you
This pattern made a very nice washcloth. It was simple yet looks more complicated than it is. Thank you!
You’re very welcome 🙂
Thank you for this easy and understandable pattern. I am making several washcloths for my daughter who is due in August
You’re very welcome 🙂
I really like this stitch. If I wanted to make it bigger, how would I make rte foundation chain? How many multiples of x plus y?
Sorry. THE foundation chain…
Hi Carin
The foundation chain just needs to be in multiples of two I have a blog post here with more details: https://blog.tcctest.co.uk/crochet-washcloth/
Hope this helps 🙂
Excellent video, fun pattern.
This is now my go-to dish cloth pattern.
Thank you 🙂
You’re very welcome 🙂
You are my go-to when I want to try a new stitch. Your demonstrations are so easy to follow. Thank you. This is my first dishcloth.
You taught me a different stitch and I finished my first blanket in 27 years a couple months ago. Ready to try something new.
You are very welcome 🙂
You taught me to crochet! I’ve just finished making this washcloth, it looks so nice. I want to make it bigger next time. Should my foundation line be even numbers only? The original being 28 (26 in your video tutorial) I might want to try chaining perhaps 38 to get a bigger cloth.
Thank you for teaching me to crochet, you’re by far the best crochet teacher online.
Hi Markus, You’re very welcome and thank you so much for your kind words I’m glad you like this pattern. Your foundation chain can be any multiple of two so you can continue chaining in twos until you reach the size you want.
Followed your intro videos and completed this one as my first project. Thanks for the clear instructions.
Just wondering. Is there a name for this pattern please?
Thanks
Hi Elaine You are very welcome, and it’s trinity stitch 🙂
This has become my favourite pattern for dishcloths! So lovely texture, so pretty yet so easy to make 🙂
I tried this pattern for my very first washcloth. I am in love with this pattern! Not only is it easy and quick but it looks adorable! Thank you for sharing with everyone!
You are very welcome 🙂
