This fun little rainbow bag is by guest designer Heather of @hookonepurlone and makes a fab gift for your child, or alternatively you can hook it up in thicker yarn and make an adult sized one (don’t forget to check your gauge!). What’s not to love? There’s rainbows, hearts and crochet!

Did you know I have a two part series of how to teach your child how to crochet? Click here for Part 1.

Pattern Notes
All instructions for this rainbow heart crochet bag are written in UK terms but switchable to US terms below.
The 2ch at the beginning of each row does not count as a st and therefore the first stitch following will be into the base of the 2ch.
Size
The square part of the heart measures 5in. Finished width of square to the top of one of the curves is 7in. If your initial square is larger than 5in the bag may become a bit floppy so therefore I’d recommend going down half or a whole hook size.
Strap length: 45in, this includes the part that joins the 2 sides. This fits my nearly 7 year old perfectly so you may need it to be longer or shorter.
Convert Pattern Terms
Here you can quickly switch between UK and US crochet terms. This will make following the pattern easier as all terms will be converted to your preferred version.
Terms and Abbrevations
Chain Stitch (ch): Insert hook, yarn over, pull though loop on the hook.
Slip Stitch (sl st): Insert hook through stitch, yarn over, pull through chain and loop on the hook.
Double Crochet (dc): Insert hook through stitch, yarn over, pull through chain stitch (2 loops on the hook), yarn over, and finally pull through two loops on the hook
Treble Crochet (tr): Yarn over, insert into chain space, yarn over, pull through, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over and then pull through remaining two loops.
Double Treble Crochet (dtr): Yarn over twice, insert into chain space, yarn over, pull through, you will have four loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, then pull through remaining two loops.

Rainbow Square:
Heart Curves
Pin For Later
Assembly
- The hearts don’t have a right or wrong side so pick either one and count up from the start of the heart curve 11 stitches.
- Insert your hook through the front loop only on the heart and through the side of the first row stitch at the beginning of the strap.
- Make a double crochet through these stitches and then repeat for a further 10 stitches to the square part of the heart.
- Make double crochet stitches evenly down the sides until you reach the bottom point where the rainbow is. I made 14dc down the straight side of each square but this depends on your tension, so you may need 1 or 2 more or less.
Making the Strap
- Row 1: Using the yarn A ch8, work a tr into the 2nd stitch from the hook,
tr to end and turn work (6) - Row 2: ch2, tr into each stitch to end. Turn work. (6)
- Repeat row 2 for a further 93 rows (or the desired length) and then fasten off.
- Make 3dc into the first st of the rainbow square then dc evenly up the other side until you reach the start of the heart curve.
- Make dc into 11st of the second curve than fasten off your yarn.
- Repeat for the other side of the bag and sew the unattached end of the strap to the first part you attached to the bag. Finally, sew in the ends.
