Learn How to Crochet a Christmas Stocking

In the post, you’ll find everything you need to learn how to crochet a Christmas stocking! Is there anything more festive than a stocking? This fun festive crochet Christmas stocking is made up of interlocking hexagons which are one of my favourite shapes to crochet! Plus it’s quick and simple to make once you’ve got the hang of a crochet hexagon. Don’t worry if you’ve never tried a crochet hexagon before because I have the written pattern and video tutorial in this post to help get you started.

    This crochet take on a Christmas stocking makes a homely festive decoration especially when hung from your mantle piece. Alternatively, you could use them as a gift bag to add that personal handmade touch to your Christmas gifts. Your recipient will then be able to reuse the stocking or keep it for decoration.

    Chain(s): ch(s): Yarn over, pull through

    Double Crochet(s): dc(s):  Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through the remaining two loops.

    Treble Crochet(s): tr(s):  Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

    I’ve broken this pattern into two sections, the first section will teach you how to crochet a crochet hexagon then I’ll show you how to join your hexagons to create a stocking. I have the written pattern and video tutorials available. I always recommend following the written pattern whilst watching the video to help you improve your pattern reading skills.

    You need to make 16 hexagons to create a stocking, see below for the written pattern and video tutorial.

    Crochet Hexagon Pattern

    To begin: In colour A, chain 4, insert hook into the first chain to make a circle

    Round 1: Ch3, tr, ch2, *2tr, ch2* 5 times, connect into the 3rd chain from the bottom.

    The chain 2 spaces have made the ‘Corners’

    Round 2: Change to colour B, ch3, tr into the top of stitch, tr in space, *ch2, tr in corner, tr into top of next two stitch, tr into same corner* 5 times, ch2, tr into corner, connect into third chain from the bottom.

    Round 3: Change to colour C, ch3, tr in next 2stitches, tr in corner, ch2, *tr in corner, tr in next 4 stitches, tr in corner, ch2* 5 times, tr in corner, tr in top on stitch, connect and tie off.

    Step 10: Ch to twice the desired loop length. Starting in second ch from hook, dc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn, dc in each st across. Fold short ends together and sl st across both ends to form a loop.

    Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing. Sew loop to upper-back point of stocking. Weave in ends.
