Materials & Tools
- Yarn: You can use any weight yarn with the corresponding crochet hook. If you are a beginner I would recommend a DK (Double Knit) weight yarn or an Aran weight yarn. In the sample images, I have used Paintbox Cotton DK.
- Hook: You will need to look at your yarn label (also known as a yarn band) to see what size hook you will need. You can also find a handy conversion chart here.

Terms & Abbreviations
Chain(s): ch(s): Yarn over, pull through loop on the hook.
Slip Stitch(s): ss(s): Insert hook, yarn over, pull through stitch and loop on hook.
Double Crochet(s): dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.
Half Treble Crochet(s): htr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining three loops.

- Foundation: Chain in multiples of 4 + 2
- Row 1: dc in second ch from hook (skipped ch does not count as st), *3 ch, skip 3 chs, dc in next ch, rep from * across. Turn.
- Row 2: 1 ch (does not count as st here and throughout), skip dc, 5 dc in ch sp, *skip dc, 5 dc in ch sp, rep from * to last ch sp, 4 dc in ch sp, dc in last st. Turn.
- Row 3: 3 ch (counts as dc and 2 ch), skip st at base of 3-ch and next st, dc in next st, *3 ch, skip next 4 sts, dc in next st, rep from * until 2 sts rem, 2 ch, skip 1 st, dc in last st. Turn.
- Row 4: 1 ch, 3 dc in ch sp, *skip next st, 5 dc in ch sp, rep from * to beginning 3-ch sp, skip last dc, 2 dc in 3-ch sp, dc in third ch of beginning 3-ch. Turn.
- Row 5: 1 ch, dc in first st, *3 ch, skip 4 sts, dc in next st, rep from * across. Turn.
- Rep Rows 2–5 until desired height.
- Fasten off and sew in ends.
