If you love granny squares I think you’re going to love the granny stripe! Add a pop of colour and a touch of nostalgia to your crochet projects with the classic granny stripe. In this blog I’ll take you through what projects you can use the granny stripe for, colour changes, the pattern and I have included a step by step video tutorial if you’d rather watch and learn. How can I use the granny stripe in my projects?
This timeless stitch pattern creates a colourful, textured stripe that’s perfect for blankets, scarves, accessories and garments. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced crocheter, the granny stripe is a fun and easy stitch that you’ll love to create over and over again. You can get creative with your colour changes also, see the images below changing colours every row, every two rows and every three rows.
Colour Changes
Bear in mind the more colour changes you make the more ends you will have to sew in so please consider this before making a start on your granny stripe project. However the beauty of the granny stripe stitch is that it looks the same on the front as it does on the back which makes it that little bit more versatile, wouldn’t you agree?
Materials & Tools
- Yarn: Stylecraft Special DK in 2 colours (Colour A, Colour B)
- Hook: 5mm or size needed to obtain gauge
- Darning Needle
- Scissors
Pattern Notes
This pattern is written in UK terms but switchable to US crochet terms below.
Skill Level: Beginner
Stitch Multiple: 3 +2
For different effects with this stitch, you can change colour every one, two, three, or more rows. If you wish to change colour for the next row, do so in the last yarn over of the last stitch.
Convert Pattern Terms
Here you can quickly switch between UK and US crochet terms. This will make following the pattern easier as all terms will be converted to your preferred version.
Terms & Abbreviations
- Chain(s) ch(s): Yarn over, and then pull through.
- Double Crochet(s): dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over and then pull through remaining two loops.
- Treble Crochet(s): tr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over and then pull through remaining two loops.
- Slip Stitch(s): ss(s): Insert hook, yarn over, pull through stitch and loop on hook.

Granny Stripe Pattern
You are viewing this pattern in UK terms.
Chain a multiple of 3 + 2.
Row 1: dc in second ch from hook (skipped ch does not count as st), dc in next ch and each ch across. Turn.
Row 2: 3 ch (counts as tr here and throughout), tr in same st as 3-ch, *skip 2 sts, 3 tr in next st, repeat from * until 3 sts remain, skip 2 sts, 2 tr in last st. Turn.
Row 3: 3 ch, skip next st, *3 tr in sp between clusters from previous row, skip 3 sts, repeat from * until 3 sts remain, 3 tr in sp between clusters, skip next st, tr in top of 3-ch. Turn.
Row 4: 3 ch, tr in sp between first and second st from previous row, *skip 3 sts, 3 tr in sp between clusters from previous row, repeat from * until 4 sts remain, skip 3 sts, tr in sp between last 2 sts, tr in top of 3-ch. Turn.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until desired height.
Fasten off and sew in ends.
