How to Crochet a Handy Pouch: Free Pattern

Learn how to crochet a handy pouch with my free step-by-step pattern and video tutortial in both right and left handed. The Elina Pouch is the perfect little companion to my Sundown Market Bag pattern and it really quick and easy to make! With it’s simple stitches, you can make this crochet pouch in as little as a few hours.

    Pattern Notes

    • Written in UK terms but switchable to US terms below
    • Skill level: Intermediate
    • This pouch is made from the bottom up. Initially, you will work on both sides of the chain before working in rounds.
    • Rounds 1-7 are worked in continuous rounds without joining.

    Gauge & Size

    • Gauge: Round 1-8 of the pouch should measure approx. 12.5cm (W) X 4.5cm (H) 4.5inch (W) X 1.75inch (H)
    • Completed size: 12.5cm (W) X 21.5cm (H) 4.5inch (W) X 8inch (H)

    Stitch(s): st(s)

    Slip Stitch(s): ss(s): Insert hook, yarn over pull through stitch and loop on hook

    Chain (ch) : Yarn over, pull through

    Double Crochet(s): dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

    Half Treble Crochet(s): htr(s): Yarn over, insert into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through remaining three loops.

    Chain 21

    Round 1: Dc in second ch from hook. Dc in next 19 chs. 2 dc in last ch. Rotate work to work into the underside of the ch. Dc in next 19 chs, 2 dc in last st. [42 sts]

    Round 2-7: Dc in each st around.

    Round 8: Dc in each st around. Join with ss to first st.

    Round 9: Ch 1 (does not count at st here or throughout), dc in first st. *Ch 3, skip 2 sts, dc; repeat from * twelve more times. Ch3, skip 2 sts, join with ss in first dc

    Round 10: Ss in next ch-3 sp. *Ch 3, dc in next ch-3 sp; repeat from * twelve more times. Ch 3, join with ss in first ss.

    Round 11-23: Repeat Round 10.

    Round 24: Ch1, dc in first st. *2 dc in ch-3 sp, dc in next st; repeat from * twelve more times. 2 dc in next ch-3 sp. Join with ss. [42 sts]

    Round 25-26: Ch1, dc in first st and around. Join with ss in first st.

    Round 27: Ss into next st and ch1, htr in first 4 sts, ch1, skip a st. Htr in next 4 sts, ch1, skip a st. Htr in next 6 sts, ch 1, skip a st. *Htr in next 4 sts, ch1, skip a st; repeat from * four more times. Join with ss in first st. 

    Round 28: Ch1, *dc in next 4 sts, dc in ch-1 sp; repeat from * once more. Dc in next 6 sts, dc in ch-1 sp. *dc in next 4 sts, dc in ch-1 sp; repeat from * four more times. Join with ss in first st.

    Fasten off. 

    Draw String

    Ch81

    Working in the back bump of the st, dc in 2nd ch from hook and across until you have one st remaining. Ss in remaining chain. Fasten off.

    Assembly

    Please note: The front of the pouch is the side where you have 6 stitches between the gaps instead of 4. The two gaps either side of these stitches will be referred to as the ‘right gap’ and ‘left gap’

    With the front of the pouch facing you insert the draw string through the right gap from outside to inside.

    Working in an anti-clockwise motion, continue to weave the draw string in and out of the work until you reach the left gap.
