When it comes to joining your projects it can often be daunting so I’ve put this blog together to show you a few different methods. Joining your hard work together makes all the different to the outcome to your project so it’s important to select the right joining method thats adds the correct strength and style to your project.
So, don’t worry if you’re muddled by Mattress Stitch or bewildered by Whipstitch. I’m going to be sharing 7 different joining methods to help you.

I’ve demonstrated the different joins using a contrasting colour yarn to help you see the technique more clearly.

MATTRESS STITCH
Mattress stitch is great for garments or projects that need a sturdy seam, for example, shoulder seams in garments or gifted blankets. If you’re looking for a crochet blanket join that’s hardwearing, simple and strong then this is the one for you.
Lay 2 pieces wrong sides facing. Insert darning needle through both loops of first stitch from inside to outside of first piece.
Insert needle from inside to outside on the corresponding stitch of the second piece.
Repeat along working in each stitch.
You may wish to work through the first and last stitches twice to secure but this is personal preference.
Every few inches, lay work flat and pull on seam too secure.
WHIPSTITCH
This crochet blanket join is good for joining seams which do not require to hold weight, for example an infinity scarf. I would only really suggest this for smaller-sized blankets where softness is required, like baby blankets.
With wrong sides facing, insert needle from front to back of first stitch working through both thicknesses.
Repeat for each stitch.
INVISIBLE STITCH
This is good if you are joining different colour crochet pieces together, because the clue is in the name…it’s invisible! So, if you’ve gone for a beautifully bright rainbow blanket this is the ideal crochet blanket join for you. I would opt for joining using the lightest colour.
With wrong sides facing, insert needle from front to back working through back loops ONLY (this will be the two outermost loops as your work is laying together).
Repeat for each stitch.

Hi Bella! I have crocheted some granny squares with a chain 3 in the corners and I am lost in where to start joining them (first chain as opposed to middle chain). Any help is greatly appreciated !
Hi Maria With a chain three in the corners I would skip the centre chain, and just join using the first and the last chain.
