Convertible Crochet Mittens by designer Aly

Aly says, I wrote this pattern while travelling around the Caribbean. Ironic as the weather was so beautiful, yet I was designing this mitten with the knowledge I’d be heading back to cooler UK climates soon. Feeling the December chill on the horizon, I wanted something warm yet practical-so that I could still use my fingers to play on my phone but hide them away when Jack Frost started to nip. Thus the Convertible Mitten was born… Made in one piece so no faffing with trying to line up separate tops and pieces-this is a beginner-friendly pattern that can be made 3-ways.

Alternatively if you want convertible fingerless gloves to mittens, carry on with the pattern as follows:

    Mitten Opening

Row 1:(should be in line with the middle of the thumb hole) **For left mitten: turn! For right mitten: do not turn!** New Beginning of Row.

Ch15, ss into 15th st. Make sure when you put your hand in, the opening you’ve just created is on the inside of your hand! It might help you to try on the glove at this point…Sc around (30)

    Row 2-7: sc around (30)

    9: sc2tog, 3sc x 6 (24)

    10: sc2tog, 2sc x 6 (18)

    11: sc2tog, 1sc x 6 (12)

    12: sc2tog x 6 (6)

Fasten off leaving a long tail. Use this tail to sew up the top.

Attach yarn to the middle of the top part you just sewed up and chain 5. Slip stitch back into first chain. This will form your loop that you will attach the flap part to the main glove (around the button) when not using it as a mitten.

Go back to the chain 15 that you made to start the mitten part of the glove and this time we are going to work on the opposite side of that chain to create a flap to cover the hole so that your hands don’t get exposed to the cold!

Leave a long starting tail. Attach yarn to the inner corner and sc across the 15st from the other side. Ch 1 to turn and sc across the 15st again. Repeat until you have 4 rows. Fasten off and weave in long end. .Lay glove flat and sew the edges of the flap up the edges of the glove with the tail ends you left.

    Close Thumb

Attach yarn to any stitch. I usually attach to the one closest up to the main part of the glove so it can’t be seen.Row 1: Sc all the way around (10)Row 2-7: repeat Row 1 Row 8: sc2tog in next st, 1sc in next st (repeat around)Row 9-10: sc2tog around.Fasten off and weave in ends. Sew up the small hole if necessary.

    Finishing

Weave in any ends and sew up cuff using long tail. Attach yarn to bottom of cuff and Sc around.Sew button on directly below where the flap would be if you unfolded the glove, near to but not on the cuff.

    1. This pattern is missing Row 8 in the mitten opening section. I just repeated row 7 and followed the pattern again starting at row 9. The mittens are a little big, but I do love them.
