    Materials and Tools needed

    West Yorkshire Spinners ReTreat yarn x 1 ball in Harmony; chunky roving yarn; 140m per 100g ball

    7 mm crochet hook

    Yarn needle

    Scissors

    Notes and gauge

    Your finished cowl should measure 18 cm height x 66 cm circumference

    The cowl is worked flat in rows with a point created at the front and decreases worked at each end.

    You start with creating L shaped piece which is sewn together at the end to create a round cowl.

    Tension

    11 sts x 8 rows = 10 cm measured over herringbone stitch

    Convert Pattern Terms

    Here you can quickly switch between UK and US crochet terms. This will make following the pattern easier as all terms will be converted to your preferred version.

    Stitches and Abbreviations

    Pattern written in UK terms but switchable to US terms above.

    yoh– yarn over

    st(s): – stitch

    RS – right side

    WS – wrong side

    ch-sp(s): – chain space

    Chain: ch(s): Yarn over, pull through.

    Slip Stitch(s): sl st: Insert hook, yarn over pull through stitch and loop on hook

    Double crochet: dc(s): Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have two loops on the hook.  Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops.

    Half Treble Crochet:  htr(s): Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, you will have three loops on the hook.  Yarn over, pull through all three loops.

    HBtr(s): – herringbone treble crochet stitch- yoh, insert hook into next st, pull up loop, pull the loop through 1 loop on hook, yoh, pull through 1 loop on hook, yoh and pull through 2 loops on hook

    HBtr2tog(s): – work the following stitches together using herringbone treble crochet stitch- (yoh, insert hook into next st, pull up loop, pull the loop through 1 loop on hook, yoh, pull through 1 loop on hook) twice, yoh and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

    Chain 73.

    Row 1: starting in 3rd ch from hook, 35 HBtr, (1 HBtr, 2 ch, 1 HBtr) in next st, HBtr to end, turn. 72 HBtr

    Row 2: 2 ch (does not count as a st here and throughout), starting with the st at the bottom of 2 ch, 1 HBtr2tog, HBtr across to next 2 ch-sp, (1 HBtr, 2 ch, 1 HBtr) in next 2 ch-sp, HBtr across to last 2 sts, 1 HBtr2tog, turn. 70 HBtr

    Repeat Row 2 another 13 times or until you reach desired height.

    Fold the L shape piece in half along the 2 ch-sp (the broken line in the sketch) with WS facing and sew or slip stitch the two edges together. Sew in all ends and turn RS out.
